Getting Started

Our recruitment fee is paid by the cruise line — not you. That said, launching a seafaring career involves certain industry-standard third-party costs that every maritime professional is responsible for. Here is our honest breakdown: • STCW Basic Safety Training — $120–$350, paid directly to an IMO-approved training institute. Required by international maritime law (SOLAS) before boarding any commercial vessel. We help you find a certified centre near you. • ENG1 Seafarer Medical Certificate — $80–$200, paid to an approved maritime medical examiner. Confirms you are physically fit for sea service. We maintain an examiner directory for most regions. • Visa and Flag State Endorsements — $30–$180 depending on your nationality. These are fixed government fees paid directly to the relevant authority. • Regional Agent Documentation Support (optional) — $0–$120 if you use a local authorised agent for paperwork assistance, apostilles, or coordination. Always optional, itemised, and receipted. You will always receive a written breakdown before any payment. Verify any agent using their OBA code at oceanbridgetalent.com/verify-agent.php before paying anything. Any request for payment via mobile money, cryptocurrency, or personal bank transfer is NOT authorised. Report it immediately to security@oceanbridgetalent.com.

Yes, for entry-level roles. We have positions in areas like housekeeping, food & beverage service, and retail that are suitable for first-time seafarers. You will, however, need to complete STCW Basic Safety Training before embarkation — this is a legal requirement, not optional. We can advise on approved training centres.
Certifications & Requirements

STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers — the international standard for maritime crew training. The Basic Safety Training (BST) component is legally required for anyone working at sea. It covers fire fighting, survival craft, first aid, and personal safety. The course typically takes 4–5 days and must be done through an approved maritime training institute. We will advise you on accredited centres in your region.

The ENG1 (or equivalent national seafarer medical) confirms you are physically fit for seafaring duties. It must be issued by an approved medical examiner — a standard GP certificate is not accepted. It covers vision, hearing, cardiovascular health, and other criteria defined by maritime health standards. The certificate is valid for 2 years (or 1 year if you are over 70).

Yes. English is the working language on virtually all major cruise ships, as required by SOLAS. You will need at least a conversational level. For guest-facing roles such as Guest Relations, Cruise Staff, or Spa, a professional or fluent level is required. A second language is a strong advantage for many hospitality positions.

Your passport must be valid for the full duration of any contract plus a buffer period for visa processing. Most cruise lines require at least 18 months validity. We recommend renewing your passport before applying if it will expire within 18 months.
Contracts & Life at Sea

Contract lengths vary by role and cruise line. Typical ranges are: housekeeping and food & beverage — 6–9 months; deck and engine officers — 4 months on / 2 months off; spa and entertainment — 6–7 months. Each job posting lists the specific contract length. Contracts are typically followed by a leave period before the option to re-sign.

Cruise ship salaries include accommodation, all meals on board, and medical care while at sea. What you earn is largely "take-home" income. Some roles additionally include a share of service charges or gratuities, which can significantly supplement base pay. All job postings show the base monthly salary range.

You can express preferences and we will factor them into our matching process. However, final placement is based on role availability, your qualifications, and the cruise line's requirements. We will always be transparent about what we can and cannot guarantee before you accept a position.

Once an offer is extended and accepted: (1) You will receive a formal Flag State Employment Agreement for review. (2) We will confirm your documentation checklist — passport, STCW, medical certificate, and any role-specific requirements. (3) You will complete a pre-departure briefing call with our placement coordinator. (4) Travel arrangements to the embarkation port are coordinated. The full process typically takes 4–8 weeks from offer acceptance to embarkation.
The Application Process

From profile submission to an offer, the typical timeline is 3–8 weeks depending on role urgency and the cruise line's availability calendar. You can track every stage of your application in real time through your applicant portal.

Yes, for the majority of positions. Interview formats depend on the cruise line — video interviews are most common. Some lines also conduct practical assessments for culinary and technical roles. Our team will prepare you for the interview format specific to your application.
